The use of automatic toilets was rejected at today's council meeting so all public toilets will remain open.
The public consultation on the possible introduction of new automatic conveniences to replace existing public toilets in Midlothian was discussed at a meeting of the Bonnyrigg and Lasswade Community Council in April 2018. The Community Council considered various aspects of the proposals and agreed to follow the consultation with a letter outlining their concerns.
There were concerns that automated toilets could be:
The Community Council is sympathetic to Midlothian Council’s budgetary constraints and requirement to achieve efficiencies. However, the Community Council members are in agreement that the best option for the local community would be to retain the existing public toilets. We appreciate that the status quo may incur the introduction of charges and pay machines but anticipate the proposed automated public toilets will likely be ‘pay to use’ anyway. Midlothian Council have posted a message on Twitter about a consultation drop-in session concerning the new school on the former site of Hopefield PS.
Consultation drop-in session takes place at Lasswade Library on 24 April, 2pm - 7:30pm. Here is the Twitter link: https://twitter.com/midgov/status/986936217706139648 Three parking wardens will start issuing tickets from 16th April. This is a Parking message sent to us by Midlothian Council “Midlothian Council has been progressing de-criminalised parking over the past 18 months following the removal of the traffic warden service by Police Scotland.
During that period various criteria had to be completed prior to an application being submitted to the Scottish Government for Midlothian Council to become a de-criminalised parking area. On 2 April 2018 the necessary powers were granted by the Scottish Government. The formal introduction of parking enforcement is due to come into force across Midlothian on 16 April 2018. This follows three weeks of warning flyers and dummy tickets being issued to illegally parked vehicles around the county. The new system will see penalty charge notices (£60 reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days) issued to any vehicle committing a parking offence in Midlothian. Decriminalised parking enforcement, that makes parking offences a civil matter rather than a criminal one, has been introduced to help reduce illegal parking in Midlothian. The system will be enforced by three parking attendants who will enforce parking controls at pay and display car parks, yellow lines, bus stops, disabled bays and school keep clears. Decriminalised parking will play a vital role in helping reduce inconsiderate parking across Midlothian, ensuring that pedestrians, cyclists and motorists can safely access important amenities such as schools, shops, health centres and industrial estates. By reducing congestion through parking restriction enforcement, the new system can also help regenerate our town centres and hopefully improve road safety for all road users.” More information about the introduction of de-criminalised parking in Midlothian can be found at www.midlothian.gov.uk/parking Bonnyrigg and Lasswade Community Council is preparing to hold their next Annual General Meeting and election of new Community Councillors.
